What is the MELD Score?

The Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score is a numerical scale used to assess the severity of chronic liver disease. It ranges from 6 to 40 and is the primary tool used by transplant centers to prioritize patients on the liver transplant waiting list.

6–9: Minimal disease — ~2% three-month mortality

10–19: Moderate disease — ~6–20% three-month mortality

20–29: Severe disease — ~20–45% three-month mortality

30–40: Very severe — >45% three-month mortality

Three Versions

  • MELD: Uses bilirubin, creatinine, and INR
  • MELD-Na: Adds sodium for better accuracy
  • MELD 3.0: Newest (2021) — adds gender, albumin, and interaction terms
