Understanding Liver Enzymes

ALT — Most specific marker for liver cell damage. Elevated in hepatitis, fatty liver, and drug-induced injury.

AST — Found in liver, heart, and muscle. Less specific than ALT but useful in combination.

GGT — Sensitive to alcohol use and bile duct problems. Often the first enzyme to rise.

ALP — Elevated in bile duct obstruction and bone disease. Context-dependent.

Bilirubin — A waste product from red blood cell breakdown. High levels cause jaundice (yellowing).
